Healthy snacks while traveling

Whether you travel frequently for work or just occasionally for travel . . . you need some snacks while on the road.  Although it has gotten better . . . it still takes some effort to find snacks that are not total garbage.  Never fear . . I’ve found some good ones over the years, below are some of my faves.

One helpful hint a co-worker once told me . . .  always always always have spare snacks in your bag such as a protein bar, almonds, crackers, piece of fruit, etc.  You never know when you will be sitting on the runway for 2 hours or not have enough time to grab dinner in between flights.  When you get your Starbucks coffee, grab a Kind bar or almonds or a banana with it and throw it in your bag.  This is a lifesaver in certain circumstances.

I also pack snacks to keep in my suitcase for those nights you are starving in your hotel room . . . so that you don’t have to hunt down a vending machine or room service.

Another trick is that I always carry Cinnamon Altoids or mints in my bag . . . in case you don’t have food it carries you over at least a little longer . . . and is better than nothing.

Here’s my favorite snacks for on the road . . . Enjoy!

Starbucks – Perfect Oatmeal

Starbucks – VIA smoothie (my favorite is the chocolate banana) – a grande with skim milk has 280 calories but has 20g protein and 7g dietary fiber.

Biena – Chickpea snacks (or make your own at home . . . here’s one of my favorite recipes courtesy of The Notsosupermama.com).  You can mix and match this recipe with any of your favorite spices or flavors.

Almonds – any kind . . . store bought or packed from home.  I always have a zip lock baggie for weeks when I have many meetings and there may not be snacks available.

Protein bars – any kind . . . my faves include Special K bars, Zone bars, Kind bars, or Mojo bars

Homemade muffins . . . . here are my 2 favorite recipes –

Chocolate zucchini muffins, courtesy of Marcussamuelson.com

Health nut muffins, courtesy of Allrecipes.com (mix and match them with different berries, nuts, chocolate chips, etc.)

Dunkin Donuts veggie eggwhite flat bread sandwich (280 calories)

Grab a sandwich from the to-go stand and eat the turkey . . . . gets rid of all the bread/cheese/mayo but gives you some lean protein when in a pinch

Popchips

Fruit of any kind . . . you can always find at the coffee stands, to-go restaurants,

Sabra’s pretzel/hummus combo cups

Flying United?  Their tapas snack box includes pita chips, hummus, greek olives, crackers, pico de gallo, Rondele cheese, and almonds.

This has been recognized as a healthy in-flight option by Healthytravelblog.com

I can never usually eat it all at once . . . which leaves me with some snacks for later.  Here is a pic –

One final thought, I have started to see several CIBO Express stands in various airports such as ORD and LGA, for the most part this stand has many healthy snack or food options available.

Healthy snacks I may have missed?  Add them below!

Happy snacking and happy traveling!
